A resident of Lithonia, Georgia, Hakeem is a licensed Professional Engineer and is currently a Transmission Line Designer for Georgia Power a Southern Company Subsidiary. He enjoys golf and reading and is married to a wonderful woman from Casablanca, Morocco named Bouchra. They have four children: Aziz (son), Jameelah (daughter), Na’ima (daughter) and Sharif (son).

Hakeem Nasheed (formally known as Lloyd Owens) is the eldest son of Granville Melvin (Deceased) and Jeanetta Louise Owens of Nashville, Tennessee. Hakeem graduated from Tennessee State University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. In 1980, he was initiated into the Alpha Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi inc. as one of the “Intangible 14.”
